The following is a letter that was written to Henry from his father John not long after he arrived in New Zealand.  It must have seemed so far away!!

My Dear Henry we send you these lines hoping to find you in good health as this leaves us all in at present, thank god for it.  We received your letter the 2nd of April and it leaves us all overjoyed that the lord has spared you.  The Boys is Doing well, we are getting on well considering this is a very wet time we have a good crop of wheat and oats.  The Boys trenched it in we have a good ale to so yet we have half an acre of potatoes set, But it is only a token. The weather is so wet, we have plenty of them for this summer, we paid our way well since you left us, the boys burned three large fires of the sods you left doog in the ditches, minured all the poor ground and put wheat in it, the potatoes ground is all in Breard, you told Esther when you would leave us that Thomas and William would do something for us Mr Mcauly promised his horse a week to plough but neither Thomas nor William would

give us one day, we are inunder less compliment to them dear Henry you were uneasy about your father been dead but thank god I am not, I am writing these lines to you.  I wrote two letters to before this and Thomas wrote the first one.  This is the 4th, we hope you have got word before this, we received 3 letters from you and a paper in your 2nd letter a little poem it leaves us all lonesome when we reading it.   Dear Henry your Mother is well at present and has nothing new to send you since you left us, but your mother bees often thinking of you.  If the boys had you at home now you would not be so far away.  Esther sends her love to you and remembers what you told her before you left home.  Dear Henry don’t be uneasy about your mother wanting the tea we get it on as usual.  Thomas and family is well, old Humphries is Dead, the wife brought all to Thomas and your place but your letter told us all.  As for Mr Jones we see no sine of going. The place looks waste for want of Mr Maxwell, William Mees family is well, John Huets family is well, and if you think well of sending for Richard he is well satisfied to go to you as David or John would now answer you.  Will no more when you get this letter.

 

Written by Richard Tilson:

Dear Henry I write you a few lines wishing to know from you would you advise me to go to New Zealand, you need not be the least loath to let me know whether I would do in it or not, I think if I was with you and James Maxwell I would do well, and be well content.  Let me know is there laborious work in it.  I have got my name down for the Excise a good while ago and got no answer.  If you and James Maxwell would advise me I would decline the notion of the Excise.  You may let James Maxwell know I am well and wonders he did not send me a letter.  You speak of getting married to an old widow if you were to come home, but I think you would be harder to please than ever, it would be some Lady you would be casting your eye upon, but your old sweet-heart is well and not married as yet.  I am intruding upon your Father’s letter or I would say more, but my Father and mother and we all send our love to you and James Maxwell and I hope you will remember us to Mr. Marcel and family   Richard

 

Mr George Armstrong and family is well and no sine of any of them getting married.  Old Mrs. Knife is about a month dead and Phill Maginel was killed in their own yard by the own baker about 3 weeks after you went away.  Mr Jones has got tularone and Dromelis, we are all glad you are in the house with James Maxwell, and remember us to old Mr Maxwell and the country people regrets him very much.

 

Dear Henry we are all well, we got no sickness since you left us all I have no more strange news to send you.  Your father, mother sister and brothers sends their love to you till death.

 



From Otago's Infant years: 29 Apr - 16 June 1858: Strathfieldsaye, ship 660 tons, Capt James Brown, Dr Robert Falconer.  Sailed from Greenock 15 Jan dropped pilot off Combrae Point on 21st and saw mainland of NZ 28 Apr.  Three births, 7 deaths and 3 marriages during passage.  Anchored at the Heads in boisterous weather where the captain was caught taking liberties with one of the girls and enraged by the exposure fired on the second mate John McKellar.  He later claimed he had fired to attract attention and help from Port Chalmers.  He was tied up and the mate took control.  Taken up to Port Chalmers by Driver 9 May.  Passengers, listed in OW 8 May included W.H. Reynolds who had been assisting James Adam in Scotland.  On 12 May Brown was charged in the Magistrate's court with the shooting and released on bail of 700  pound.  On 22 May he was charged with breaches of the Passenger Act.  Wm Hempseed, James Sime and Alexander Garry gave evidence of short provisions and Brown was fined 30 pound.  He later slipped away in the Strathallan.  Ship was chartered by Macandrew for Melbourne with 59.5 bales wool and 2,757 bags oats and saled under Capt McNeur with J. Barr, J. Macandrew and in steerage, McKay and Dodds.  Cargo sold on a falling market.  The ship was named for the Duke of Wellington's estate on the Thames.

 

The following letter, dated from Dunedin, 20th August 1858, having appeared in a home paper.
"We left Glasgow in the Strathfieldsaye on the 15th January, and parted company with the pilot at Cumbrae Point on the 21st, and on the 28th April saw the mainland of New Zealand. With what feelings of emotion we caught the first glimpse of land of our adoption, after being so long tossed on the mighty deep, can only be described by those who experience it. Disappointing as it was to what we fancied, instead of green hills rising in gentle acclivity from the shore, you see a rocky, rugged-looking shore, with sterile bare-looking mountains covered with snow, and extending as far as the eye can reach. This is the general feature of the country so far as I have seen; but I am told there are fine plains in the interior.
Owing to the wind, we were obliged to lie at anchor about half-a-mile off the mouth of the harbour for eleven days. On the 10th we landed at Port Chalmers, a small hamlet with about a dozen wooden houses, when the married people left for Dunedin in a small craft. The captain was caught taking liberties with one of the girls, and was so enraged at the exposure consequent upon the discovery, that he fired amongst us in the dark, the ball carried off the second mate finger, fortunately without injuring any one else, though it passed through a crowd of us, and lodged in the forecastle. We rushed upon him, and, having tied him with a rope, gave the mate charge of the ship. Next day he was sent a prisoner to Dunedin, when he was bailed for £700. He never made his appearance at court for trail, but went off with the Strathallan, by which he forfeited his bail. He was also tried for ill treatment and withdrawing our stores, for which he was fined £30, and the owners have to pay £300 for short provisions and damages sustained by the passengers. This will give you an idea of the treatment we received onboard.
On the 11th all the young people on board sailed for Dunedin, a distance of 8 miles, in small boats, and landed at 1 p.m. To give you a description of the place nothing could be more disappointing - a few straggling wooden houses without order or regularity merely temporary as if built on a ..... serve for two or three days; the streets, if they can be so termed, ankle deep with mud, their stores paltry little shops, such as you will find in a country village at home. The face of the country hereabouts bears a sterile, hilly aspect, except where covered with wood. What a feeling of disappointment is exhibited by all new arrivals to what they were led to expect from the government agent's (Mr Adam's) description! Had he been in reach of us he would have had to run hard for his life.....
The Government agent was well aware when he strongly recommended young men to take wives, that they would not be able to leave the place, and if females were scarce when he left they are at a discount now, not only that they can not obtain husbands, but places. Some who came in our ship have not got the offer of a place yet, and most of those have had to go 50, 60 and 70 miles, no easy task in this country. Instead of £25 and £30, £15 and £20 are the highest wages, of which they have to do the work of two or three at home. Several left their places unable to stand it. The demand for men is equally dull, and the wages from £30 to £50; very few above £40. Characters and introductory letters are of no use.
Cabin passengers who could talk of nothing during the voyage but horse races and coursing dogs, had to shoulder the pick and off to the quarry and the road. Here you will find men of various artistic skills at the barrow, the shovel or pick; and wonderfully well content until wages were reduced to 5s. per day, when the young men struck and spread throughout the country. The poor unfortunates who cannot leave cannot be well off, owing to the rate of provisions accommodation. The meanest hut they can get is 10s a week - board and lodgings of a common description 1 a week - with one wet day weekly. we have no regular mails here, only some stray vessel once in a month and sometimes in three months.

.Wedding at Port Molyneux.  Oor toonship was in a perfect camsterie last Wednesday week wi' traps driving, horses gallupin', callants yellin, and bagpipes skirlin'; and a' this was the coutcum o' a waddin' pairty that was to be held in oor hall.  The ceremony had been gane throo at midday.  The contracting pairties were Miss Tilson, the dochter o' ane o' oor auldest settlers, and Mr Richard Campbell o' Invertiel.  The knot was tied by the Rev. A.M. Dalrymple, a gey deft hand at the  job.  Miss Maggie Tilson was best maid, and Mr J. Campbell best man.  Efter the ceremony there was the usual toasting and breakfasting.  There were sum 160 invitashuns sent oot for the pairty at nicht, and Peggy an' me got ane amang the lave.  Sae efter milking and foddering up oor coos for the nicht, we syne began tae get reddy, bit it tuk us a gey while for Peggy was unca' fikey aboot hersel', for she's a wee bit consaited tho' you wadna' need tae tell her sae.  Hoosever, we gat there at half-past 8 o'clock, and fund the hall nicely decorated and fu' o' folk.  The grand mairch was led aft by Mr J. Potiki (M.C.) and Miss Melville, followed by the new married couple and sum 30 unmarried couples - owre mony for the flure.  The crush spoilt the effect, and the figgers didna' look weel wi' kinks in them.  The dance then went on wi' great speerit.  Lasses predomenated, an' while sum gat mair dancing than was gude for them, sum nae doot cood hae dune with a trifle  mah.   Mr W. Murray wielded the bow, and was raither unfortinate in the first dance or twae wi' strings breading, whilk made him a bit nervish, but efter a while Mr P. Tulloch gied him a hand, and oor young piper, Mr W. Smith and evertying went A.1.  At half-past 12 an abundance of tea and cakes was handed roond, and dune full justis tae.  Mrs Tilson as hostess made a' body welcum, and did her pairt tae perfecshun.  But the dresses, losh naun, I wush oor Maple or Diana had been there tae dae them justis, or it wad hae been a godsend for Jimmyline, whae tae judge by his notes (he's nae wumman) is gey sair forfeuchen for sumthing to write aboot.  Weel it's nae flattery tae say the bride has a figger that adorns an ordinary dress, sae you may guess a byordinar' nice dress set aff her fine figger.  It was a rich dark velvet, toshed wi' white satin.  The rest o' the lasses were a' weel and tasty drest, and seemed to be enjoying themsels tae there fu' bent, and sae did a sonsy lauchin' faced chiel frae you toon.  I think the freshness and freeness o' oor lasses with the absens o' cleeks and classes brocht him in min' o' the Auld Countree he hadna' lang left.  The hale affair passed off tae perfecshun.  The bride gat a host o' presents; aboot everything she'll han'le and look at in her new hame 'ill bring her in mind o' her auld freens, and it's to be hoped that sune sum mair o' oor lasses 'ill hae the good fortune tae gang the same gait - Frae your auld freen' Gibbie Scott Haggis Ha Brae.

 

Also - From our own Correspondent:  A very pretty wedding took place at the residence of Mr H. Tilson, Port Molyneux on Wednesday the 9th inst. the contracting parties being Katherine Amelia, the oldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Tilson, very old and highly respected settlers of the Port, and Mr R. Campbell of Invertiel.  The bride who was given away by her father, looked very charming in an electric blue velvet dress white veil and wreath of orange blossoms.  The bride was attended by her sister Maggie, her niece Mary (a wee tottie of three summers) and Miss Campbell (sister of the bridegroom) as maids.  Mr J. Campbell (brother of the bridegroom) performed the duties of groomsman.  The interesting ceremony was performed by the Rev A.M. Dalrymple, M.A.  After the usual congratulations had been offered to the newly married couple, a few friends were invited to partake of a substantial wedding breakfast.  The presents (which were eagerly inspected and criticised, especially by the female portion of the guests). were useful, ornamental and costly.  In the evening a dance in honour of the event was held in the Hall, Port Molyneux which was nicely decorated for the occasion and comfortably filled with guests.  Dancing was commenced a little before nine o'clock and was kept up with great spirit until near midnight, when an abundant supply of refreshments was handed round, afterwards dancing was recommenced interspersed with songs and continued until 5 a.m. when every one highly pleased with their nights enjoyment wended their way home.  In the course of the evening Mr R.S. Murray, Puerua and Mr Marshall of Finnengan, on behalf of the visitors, kindly thanked in a few appropriate remarks, Mr and Mrs Tilson for their kindness and liberality.  The onerous duties of M.C. were faithfully carried out by our genial J. Potiki the right man in the right place.  The music being supplied by Mr Wm Murray of Nugget Bay and other gentlemen.  I shall not attempt a description of the ladies dresses but content myself with saying they were dressed with exquisite taste.

Dear Parents, I am going to give you a short account of N.S.W. But first I will start with A.J.Tilson. An old joker that is living in Sydney. I went up to Glebe point and paid him a visit. I found his name in the directary. The old fellow is  …. 63 years old, he stands about 5 foot 11. He is gray headed and gray whiskers, with head something like my little  Brother John, but the back of the head more rounded. Nose very like you my Dad. Pretty big ( please excuse the term) eyes always winking, with a bit of a twitching at the one side of the mouth when he is going to laugh. His nose is a bit bent to one side. The general look of the face is a bit like Fathers. He is a smart good looking old gentleman. He never takes his eyes off a fellow when talking. He comes from Cavan. His father was an archietect in Westmeath. His uncles name was Richard. He is an only son, an engineer by trade has a sister in Auckland N.Z. He says the Tilsons came over from England with Lord somebody, the conquer. He says there is only one family of Tilsons. I could not give him much information. He has a wife in bad health. We made a mistake in coming here without first writing and getting a shed first. I have paid dear for my experience. I wish I had never left W.A. although it is bad food and feaver. I think I could always get work there such as it is. They are digging graves in Perth now night and day since the rain started. The rain washed every thing into the reservoy. They have not sanitary arangments either in Perth or Coolgardie but out in the bush it is right enough. Keep out of all town in W.A. and I think you will live. To go in for other work here in N.S.W. you wont want any blankets or bed for they want you to work all the time. A fellow might get a job scrub cutting to feed the sheep at 6/ per day. It sounds right enough but that day is 15 and 16 hours and tucker yourself. There are plenty of swaggers here. We will stop till the next boat goes to N.Z. then we leave if nothing good turns up before that. William is always at me to join the police here but I don’t know yet if I will
